Importance of the Therapeutic Relationship

Psychiatric care in Waco, TX, now accepting new patients.

Academic studies have shown repeatedly that people have the best outcomes when there is a strong alliance between them and their doctor. People who trust their doctor or therapist and believe that they will be helped do far better than those who do not. This relationship even impacts response to medication. This is why it is so important that I have good rapport and a strong working alliance with my patients.  It impacts treatment response!

Are we a good fit for one another?

Let's find out.  Read below to find out if we might be a good fit and how to move forward with establishing care.

Goodness of Fit

Like any meaningful relationship, building an effective therapeutic alliance takes time.  In effort to improve the chances of a successful outcome, consider the following questions.  If you answer "yes" to the following, then there's a good chance we can do quality work together.

  • Are you between the ages of 18-64?

  • Are you seeking care from the states of Texas or South Carolina?

  • Are you willing to take an active role in developing your treatment plan, including:

    • Commitment of time and energy to make your scheduled appointments?

    • Willingness to explore your preferences and values to ensure your values guide all clinical decisions?

    • Openness to shake off the "illness model" and instead embrace a "wellness model" as it relates to your life?

  • Do you understand that while I do have a group of patients that I see in person at my office in Waco, Texas, the majority of my practice is conducted exclusively via telemedicine?  Furthermore, that means:

    • My practice is ideally suited for conditions that do not require crisis intervention or need the attention of a more extensive care team.

    • As a provider of outpatient, non-emergent services, Balance Psychiatry and Wellness, PLLC, is not equipped to manage the need for high acuity/intensive psychiatric services, such as urgent care, daily intensive treatment, or the need for inpatient or after hours care.   Patients with recurrent crises benefit from close monitoring through a multi-disciplinary team (including case managers, psychiatric technicians, therapist and psychiatric subspecialists), which are not available at this small practice.

    • When considering medications for telepsychiatry patients, it is important that we stay away from controlled substances like stimulants and benzodiazepines (i.e. Adderall, Xanax), which can be habit-forming and addictive.  Please refer to the Ryan Haight Act for a greater understanding of the prohibition of prescribing controlled substances via telepsychiatry.

    • I do not provide forensic evaluations, court-related testimony, or mandated treatment.  I do not complete long-term disability assessments.

  • Have you visited the About section?  Do you feel my approach is a good fit for you?

  • Have you reviewed the Insurance and Financial Polices and understand that I am in network for Aetna, Oscar, Optum, and United Healthcare?  All other insurance is out-of-network?
